Media literacy. Regular training in the Central City Library

A specialty of the contemporary stage of development of the society is an impetuous increase of the flow of information, improvement of the information technologies and computer techniques.  

The increase of the amount of the information that is perceived by people frequently turns by its negative side. The information is often unsystematic, excessive, aggressive and is a direct threat to a person’s mental security, to his personal development, causing informative shock. Due to this fact the formation of  media literacy and information culture of the co-workers is becoming actual.

Media literacy – is an ability to analyze and systemize space- time reality. The formation of critical thinking, upbringing of the creative personality on the basis of work with media text, that is being used in Mass Media, advertising, works of art are included into the list of the assignments of media literacy. 

On the 6th of June, 2018 there was held a regular training on media literacy for co-workers of the public libraries of  Kharkiv in Belinskiy Central City Library. The process of visualization, creation of visual images that are reflecting the sense of the definitions, notions  are included into the basis of each assignment that were prepared by Olga Vitaliyivna Zubrenko, the librarian of  Kharkiv’s Oblast Universal Scientific Library. 

Key concepts that were considered are security of the work in the Internet, network etiquette, the ability to perceive media content critically, to check news announcements, in a word to be a high- grade and full-fledged participant  of  a modern media life that covers all of us. That’s why it’s necessary to learn how to manage media, otherwise media will start managing us. These game rules cannot already be changed nowadays. Yet it’s possible to learn how to live and not to distance ourselves from the media, but to use them comprehensively.
